Aeromotor 702 reassembly ?s

Post by windmill »

I bought a complete Aermotor 702 with a 6ft wheel assembly from a friend, he rebuilt the head, and I am now installing the external parts. it came with a new set of blades and arms which installed with no problems. Problem is the buffer device doesn't line up with the hole in the tail bone assembly and the tail bone casting does not latch on the tail bone assembly as you can see by the picture. The buffer device and the tail bone casting are original to the head, the tail bone assembly is a new part. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum.

I don’t have any 6’ X702 tailbones to measure, but it looks like the tailbone flat bar, where the buffer bolts too, is welded too far away from the gearbox. You could cut it out and move it towards the gearbox an inch or so as needed and re-weld it. Hit it with some cold galvanized paint once completed. Others might have better advice.

On my 6ft 602 it measured roughly 9 inches from the tail pin to the hole on the brace the buffer bolts on to.

Aermotor parts falls in to three categories. Aftermarket, clone and genuine. Genuine is only procured from Aermotor in San Angelo. Parts purchased on ebay regardless of how advertised unless it is vintage used parts is not genuine Aermotor.

Your wheel, spokes and tailbone are aftermarket. I can identify the source by how built. A jig is used to build the tail bone so it would be unlikely that bone is incorrect.

The buffer is under tension meaning the bolt on the buffer does not drop in to the hole of the Z bar of the bone. You don’t notice it when the buffer is already attached to the bone before the tail pin is put in but that is why you have to drive the tail pin in while putting side pressure on it. If you install the buffer without attaching to the bone first, then you have to use a line punch and vise grips to get the bolt in. It is hard to tell how much yours is off in the pic. The tail should be fully open to assemble.

It may be camera perspective but it appears the tail is hanging down. New tail pin and tail pin holes in case brought to round?

I think the reason for it being farther off is that new bolt you put in the buffer. You even have it tightened with a lock washer. The original style bolt in that is not tight and has a hole in the bolt for a cotter pin to retain the nut.

You wont really know if the 585 tail bone casting is not contacting the lower strut of the bone until you have it all assembled as all the brake and furl parts interact. Ideally, assembly happens on a real mast and stub so you can test. It is not good if the 585 jumps the strut as it will lathe the hub. There is an easy remedy if it is an issue and can be done after the fact.

Thank you for the feedback! I do measure 9", repositioning the tail bone flat bar will definitely be an easy fix. And yes the tail bone assembly is from San Angelo. It's the picture making it look like the tail is hanging down. The top nut/lock washer on the tail bone pivot bolt are lose. I will install the brake and furl parts as suggested, hopefully they will enable 585 tail bone casting to drop down 1/2" so in can engage with 639 tail bone assembly. If it doesn't my only choice is the grind down the bottom of the tail bone casting, where 510 the tail bone pivot post goes through, then install washers on the top of the tail bone casting so it can't ride up causing it do disengage. Thank again everyone for the feedback!
