Hello,
I was able to get ahold of Dan and had a great conversation with him. He is going to build me a new wheel and arms for my project. Thanks to this site and the members the mill should be good for quite a few years.
I have a couple of questions for the group. First, during reassembly should I use any type of thread sealant around the threads on the plugs that go into the gearbox? Please see pic for reference. If I should be using something what do you recommend?
Also, I will be painting the tips of the new wheel red to match what they looked like when they were new. Dan and I discussed this briefly, but what does it take to get paint to stick to galvanized steel? He recommended a etching primer but is there one product that is better than another? Does anyone know how much of the tips were painted from the factory, like 4" or 6" or?
Thanks,
MOD 8

Re: MOD 8 Restoration
On your plugs use anti seize in case you need to remove them. On my model 8 i did 4 inches of IH red. I just sanded mine first but being yours are new i would also prime first.
Re: MOD 8 Restoration
You could use a sealer as long as it comes apart when you need it to. That;s a tapered thread, so it should seal anyway.
Original paint is head, red. Sail tips , red. Outline around tail, red.

Call Dan Benjamin for parts. P M me for the phone number. IF YOU TALK TO HIM, AND HE HELPS YOU, THEN BUY FROM HIM. IT CREATES GOOD KARMA.

Hello,
Thanks again for the replies to my seemingly never ending list of questions... I will probably be using IH red as recommended as I know there is a lot of leftover paint from tractor projects.
Please take a look at the attached photos and let me know if this is the correct Heller Aller wheel hub for a MOD 8. This is the hub that came off it and according to any photos I have have been able to find. Don't want to assume the hub is correct, since the wheel that came off it was not!
Thanks

Re: MOD 8 Restoration
IH red would look very nice. While I have little experience with HA windmills, the hub does look accurate for that model.
