Comet Windmills

Post by Slim »

A thread on this forum had a topic about Australian windmills, and furling was brought up. This led me to start checking out some Australian windmills, and I found the Comet brand Australian made windmills.

If you’ve never looked into them, they seem to be pretty cool and the way that they oil and how they are designed, I I think they make a C pattern and a D pattern. One thing has me puzzled about both the C & D pattern Comet mills the mast pipe seems to be center with shaft and they have no side vane, how do they furl or turn out of the wind? I’ve only seen them in pictures on the Internet and never saw one in person so maybe I’m missing something.

Oh yeah, I read somewhere that they as in Comet still use wood bearings like Lignum Vitae. Old ships use to use Lignum wood for prop bearings.

There is Comet windmills in Australia.. Manufactured by Comet Windmills Australia Pty. Ltd. There is an article in the Windmill Journal Vol 22 No.1 March 2023. If you contact Helen Walter at the Windmill Journal email mal50walter@wn.com.au she could give you more info. I think you can buy back issues. You can email sales@cometwindmills.com.au and get pricing on a 3 ft model. Be sure and mention the Windmill Journal.
