Challenge erecting winch

Generally speaking, this area is for general discussion about windmills, in most cases.

Challenge erecting winch

Post by CTXmiller »

Not mine, but I saw this for sale online (MarketPlace) and was curious if Challenge made these for erecting windmills.

I found some Flint & Walling literature that has a similar style.

That appears to be a HEAVY chunk of iron , great for pulling up windmills a hundred years ago . Now would make a good piece of yard art . or furling the windmill tail ? or pulling down hole pipe , or

I’m not interested in buying it, but was curious when I saw the Challenge name. Could be…

The Challenge literature that I saw reflected a pullout winch for the larger windmills that is like the Axtell (16’-18’) winch, both of which are lighter than the winch for sale. I’d only be guessing, but the Axtell pullout winch weight 25lbs or so. Now the winch for sale that I posted photos of, could be for the largest Challenge 20’/22’ models and looks 50lbs or more.

It sure looks like the Flint and Walling picture. I'd bet it' was used for the erecting of windmills. My question what would you connect it to, so it stayed on the ground?

I'm thinking that several of the makers of mills probably all made the same kind of implement to assist in erecting mills and such. F/W had a line of Hoosier accesories. Challenge had nothing Hoosier as far as I know.
Call Dan Benjamin for parts. P M me for the phone number. IF YOU TALK TO HIM, AND HE HELPS YOU, THEN BUY FROM HIM. IT CREATES GOOD KARMA.
