How screwed am I?

Post by ksmokowski »

Looks like it ran for a while before finally blowing down in a windstorm. The housing is pretty worn out as you can see from the pictures. I was thinking I could cut it off near where its worn out, and make a new housing end on the lathe that's a press fit. Either that or get a new housing but that seems pretty expensive. I am actually thinking of putting it back in service in a remote stock pond.

Last photo is a basic design for the housing end to help visualize what I am talking about. The gears and other parts aren't all that bad.

I say go for it what do you have to loose but your time. Better yet if it works that's one heck of an accomplishment to be proud of. Best of luck 👍

Believe it or not, I have taken a 602 case that was worn just like that, and cut the snout off another one and welded it on. More than once. A 702 would be much trickier, due to the bearing type.

Whatever you try, make sure you understand the oil flow/return dynamics.

That case can be welded and built back up. Done them before. Or you can cut the snout off and weld a different on one. I have a bunch of snouts of you choose to go that route. If your going to weld a shoot on you’ll need to make yourself a shaft to hold it together and straight so it doesn’t pull when welding.

With that much wear wouldn't the gears be badly worn, at an angle. Is that a 6' or 8' foot windmill case?

Justin is right. I have welded other snouts on before. Mostly 602 cases, due to the bearings being poured in, and being with 1/1000 inch is not critical. Even 1/100 is not. even 1/ 16 is not. On a 702, that would certainly be an issue.

If you are interested, I may have a 6 foot case.
