Dempster wheel or not?

Have a part you can't identify? Did your parts get mixed up in the shop? Curious if that chunk of metal is a part you should keep? Not sure what kind of windmill or tower you have? Post photos of the mystery object here for the community to help identify.

Dempster wheel or not?

Post by windybob »

If any knows what this single rivet wheel section is, would be interested to know. Looks like a Dempster (also in picture) but has a single rivet clip, and the bead is close to the edge. I have never seen a Dempster like this, but maybe off a really old one? Old ones don't have the bead, I''m sure, or at least I have seen a lot of old ones without a bead. Another kind of windmill? The clips look the same, the rails look the same, same size as a known Dempster next to it. Also the small clip is on the backside instead of front.
Kind of interesting. Thanks.

I think you are right Dan. From what I can see they look like the clips on a 27.

There is a feature assures that this is a Challenge 27 wheel.

Note the 2 beads on the outer half of each blade that are at a right angle to the wheel rims. Due to the horizontal positioning of the wheel, in this instance they will appear to be "under" the wheel clips. I do not know of any other windmill company that did this.

Not all wheels of C-27s will have this feature. I believe it was introduced at some point in the production run of the C-27 for wheels 8 foot size and up; and some early C-27s do not have it. It seems that the wheels of the 6 or 6 3/4 foot size C-27s never this feature, or else I have never seen one that did.
