Pouring Babbitt 602

Post by Missourimiller »

Noticed tonight on a 602 As I was melting the Babbitt out, the pour hole for the rear bearing was on the inside of the case. On other 602s I’ve dealt with the pour hole has been on the outside of the case. I’m guessing the changes were for ease of pouring? (. Yes No) Anyone know? It’s kinda tight pouring the inside hole with my ladle I’m thinking I’ll just drill a new hole on the outside and plug the inside hole when pouring.

Whatever makes it easier. I don't use that hole anyway. I put putty over it and pour directly into the shaft bore.

Windy, what putty do you use when pouring babbitts? I have had a hard time finding anything available so I have used electrical damming compound, a 3M product.

Try Roto-Metals:

I have not used Roto Metals, but think its the same as the stuff McMaster used to sell (which I still have). I don't think it matters, it all works the same ... it all leaks, LOL.
Thanks,
Ed

Windy, what I have used works, pretty stiff at first but the warmer it gets the softer it gets but doesn't melt. You can reuse it once it cools a little. Better than nothing i guess.
