Just got home and checked. According to my parts list, the two tail castings, the pin, and the spring bushing are the same part number for the 6’ and the 8’ mills. The spring for the 6’ and 8’ mills though is a different part number.

So the spring from your 6’ mill is the correct diameter but appears to have 1 additional turn. Smaller diameter spring wire for a slightly weaker spring? I have about 4.5” from the top of the bulb on the lower tail casting, to the underside of the mill case tab. Spring should be about 5-3/8” tall, including the spring bushing at the top.

So how critical is the governor spring tension?

What is the ID of the spring you need? The difference between the two as far as tension is probably nominal. There is a lot of adjustment anyways. I think I posted measurements of the spring in an earlier post. Let me know if a fit is proper, and I'll send it.

Best I can tell be measuring across the bulb on my lower cast piece I’m looking good at 2-1/8” ID for a spring.

Is this what you need? For an 8 ft? I don't have one, but you can use a valve spring, and a carraige bolt.

PM me your address. I will box up and send you the other stuff. I need back surgery, so may be out of commission for a while as soon as I get an appt.

Sorry to hear about your back. Best of luck with the surgery. I'll cross my fingers with you on the appointment.

I already sent you a PM with my address.

I had thought about using a valve spring, and I have a box of those...somewhere. Time to visit my father in law's shop. He's been collecting junk longer than I have, and I know where his box of springs is stored.

windyBob- Your parts showed up yesterday! The mail-lady dropped it off on the front porch but my kids didn't discover it until this morning so I missed the chance to play with it yesterday. I'm hoping to get to mess with it some this afternoon though.

I also got with my father in law and raided his spring bin. I think we found a good option or two for that bumper spring.

I did have a slight setback. I cut my new shaft material to length and went to chuck it up in the lathe to start turning it and discovered that either my little hobby lathe is Just too small for the job. It's either too short, or the chuck throat is too small a diameter. My shaft is 1-1/8" OD, and the throat on the lathe chuck is only 1". So I can't slip the shaft back in the chuck, and I can't get a live center on the far end. So much for that idea. But I have a couple of options. I have a buddy at work with a bigger lathe. And he'll let me use it free of charge. It's just a short 2-hour drive away. The other option is to farm it out to a local machine shop and pay a professional to do it for me. I know I'll like the results, I just didn't want to spend that money. But I mentioned it to the wife this morning and she offered to make it an early Christmas present. So that's getting dropped off this morning.

That should be all my parts and pieces then. I guess it's time to start thinking about blasting and painting. I think I decided on a hunter green for the case and the tips of the sail. My tail metal isn't is terrible shape, but it's not in good shape either and it's been painted over with a bright silver paint so I don't have a nice aged galvanized patina. I think I'm going to price up a piece of new metal just to see. We've got a couple of sheet-metal shops in the area that I'm sure could sheer that shape out and roll that outside edge for me pretty quick. I have a picture of the original stenciled "FAIRBANKS MORSE." tail metal. I also have a projector. It wouldn't be too hard for me to screw the new metal to the wall and project the picture of the tail onto it and trace out the letters. If I go that route, I'm not sure whether to use green paint for the lettering and match the case, or use black. I'm going to scroll through some threads on here looking for pictures and see what is the norm, and see what I like best. I decided on my final tower height that way. When we bought it, it had been moved several times and shortened each time. 8 foot sail, and a 17' tower. Visually, it just looked like too big a sail on too short a tower. 1:4 looks about perfect to me. 6' sail on a 24' tower, 8' on a 32' tower, 10' on a 40' tower. The ratio is pleasing to the eye. Pleasing to my eye anyhow. Although I do love the huge mills on a short tower. I think it makes them look that much bigger.

When I get the chance to mess with it again I'll post pictures. Thanks again for everyone's help. I might just get this thing installed before the year is up.

Glad you are finding your way through the menagerie of mangled mechanical mess. Sounds like you have a good plan.
You are correct about the eye appeal of the right wheel size for the right height of tower.

Show a picture of the writing on the tail, I have tons of stencils, maybe i have one.
