Re: Mike Hage new member
Thank you windybob I think that worked. Not sure why they went sideways. My mill is definitely a Butler all the casting numbers match the ones on the parts list from the windmill parts site. It is a massive engine and the castings are rather crude. The storm stay or trueing spider is a weakness as every one of these ive seen sits crooked. Every hole is slopped out so I'm going to have to fill them up a bit with cast weld and bore the holes straight again. Maybe put in a bushing? Any advice on this?

You're welcome. And the picture sideways thing seem to be a common issue posting pictures, Paul V had a reason for that he posted not long ago. Has something to do with landscape vs portrait setting or something.
Stormstays wear due t the prevailing winds on the mill. Fill it, or sleeve it. Some have grease fittings. It only took like 100 years for it to wear like that, so I wouldn't worry about future wear too much.
Hope you find the hat logo for the vane. Seeing it reminded me that the vane, and ( i think) sail tips had the red paint trim.

Nice to see my friends Mike West and Peter Vonkaenel. This site is awesome! Thank you for telling me about it. I'm the only one I know of around here playing with wind chargers and mills

Welcome to the board Mike! Here's a pic of an original double gear vane off a 10' version.
I believe the other side is the same, but I don't remember for sure....
