Oil. Bath windmills
Right or wrong.I was told by a windmill repair veteran of 30yrs to use transmission fluid in my oil bath windmills.
Re: Oil. Bath windmills
I use both have not had any issues with red tranny fluid. Like the availability as I cannot always find 10 wt non detergent motor oil

Here's a link to a past discussion on windmill oils.

I feel that any of the suggested lubricants will serve well provided the mill is serviced regularly. We're trying hydraulic fluid/ATF this change cycle.

The reason we changed is because after 11 months, the 10w ND we were using would turn to mud, and parrafin up the mill. Then the bearings would go in Dempster mills, and after trying to analyze the situation, I decided the oil was going first, thus causing the bearings to crash, instead of the other way around. We changed lubricant, and cured the problem.

Re: Oil. Bath windmills
I have been using ATF for a few years and it seems to be working fine. Just serviced the windmills we have in late April before the cows went in the pasture in May. The ATF seems to be holding up fine.
