The Corcoran Windmill is here

Post by Jim Corcoran »

I finally got the A. J. Corcoran windmill. I’ve known of its existence since 2008 but was not able to locate it until this year. It wouldn’t have been found without the exceptional help of Dan Therrien (windcatcher530dan). I owe him much gratitude for his efforts. It was in Cape Vincent, NY.

It’s a 16-foot Model E apparently purchased new around 1939. Much of it is still in the original crates, although the crates have suffered from long term storage and are very delicate.

Even though it was stored indoors the metal parts have the expected amount of rust, but enough of the original paint is there to see it was painted green. Some of the wood parts are showing the effects of the local mice population. It appears to be complete, but I will take the time to go through all the parts to see if I can determine if anything is missing. Fortunately, I have a shop crane in my garage to help with picking through the parts.

I must admit it is a great feeling and experience to see and handle something built in my great-great-grandfather’s factory. Really looking forward to my grandsons coming to see all of this. BTW, one of my grandsons is named A. J. Corcoran.

Les,
As much as I would like to restore it and put it up in my den, my plan is for the mill find a home at the American Windmill Museum in Lubbock. It needs to be on exhibit so everyone can see it, including the next generations of my family.

Les thank you for the kind words. It was a pleasure finding and helping jim get this mill. I'm glad it's in family hands now where it belongs but also displayed where others can enjoy.
