OK, I have seen some big cylinders from years ago but I am wanting to make one today. I asked about this on the old forum and didn't get a lot so I thought I would try again. I do have a 4 inch and that is OK for my 16ft Aermotor but I am working on getting a larger windmill or an oilfield pump jack. My thoughts are taking some heavy wall PVC and lathing the outside down so it is a press fit inside a seamless tube. The other option would be use a polished Stainless tube like they use for hydraulic cylinders but I don't think I have ever seen a SS well cylinder so is there a reason for that? I can buy big Stainless steal balls to use for the checks, I can also buy brass rounds by the foot up to 10 inch dia so I figure I can lathe out the cup holders and check ball cages. Has anyone else done this? Can you buy a 5 or 6 inch cylinder anyplace? If someone has an old large one they want to sell I would be interested also.
On the old forum there was a place listed that would custom make leathers, does anyone know where that is?
Thanks for any help.

Have you checked Midland?

I don't see why SS can't work fine. I just got done putting SS jetrod and couplers in a shallow well. If you can machine it, go for it.
I have a few 4 inch cylinders, but they wont work I'm sure. Too short, (12") and a single leather plunger. For shallow wells only. Plus, I don't think they even have a liner in them.

Yes, I don't know why SS won't work either, for the barrel of it I can buy it by the foot already honed, I would only have to thread it. Hey Windy, you don't happen to have a deep well 3 1/2 inch plunger do you? I got 3 brand new cylinders and have been planning on machine them out if I can't find a used one. The thing of it is, I can make a great big one just as fast a s a little one and they a lot less fun!
Re: Building a cylinder
I do not have a plunger like that. No such thing as a deep well around these parts. When I bought out the hardware store items years ago in Colorado, there was nothing like that in the boxes either.

Midland 444 goes only up to 4" with 20" stroke. Largest open top is 3.75" for 4" pipe. A 4" 444 is around $500 as we set one last week.

Those are nice people. I guess they are the couple that was at one of our trade fairs. If I remember right, I ordered, they shipped with a bill, then I sent them a check. Not too many people will do that today.

Thanks, I did call Aermotor, they said Midland no longer makes the 3,5 stuff but could on special order. I figured that probably meant 5x the price so I didn't ask any more. Maybe I should check direct. Thanks
