Can it be saved?
Can it be saved?
I purchased a Hudson hand pump from a junk store yesterday. I have disassembled it to the point you can see in the pictures. It appears to be complete but a couple of pieces are broken. The top flange at the threaded bushing and also, the top rod guide. Probably not what they are called but hopefully everyone understands what I mean. My question is, can I bring it back to life? I am hoping to attach it to my windmill if I can get it going. Any thoughts or ideas?

If it's going to be hooked up to a well, there is something you absolutely need to check first.

Heck yeah that definitely can be saved. You could fabricate a new rod guide and weld it where the other one broke. I also would make a new pump rod with flat stock and rod welded together. The rod will need to be long enough to stick around a foot below the bottom of the pedestal pump and threaded. usually inch and a half pipe screws in the bottom of the pedestal pump.

What is it I need to check first? I do plan to use it on a well, but that might be awhile.windybob wrote: Sat Aug 30, 2025 3:16 pm If it's going to be hooked up to a well, there is something you absolutely need to check first.

There are pipe threads up in the body by where the spout is. If those threads are bad, or there is a pipe broken off, then you can't screw the well pipe in there. If you use it for a well, that's what holds the drop pipe. The threads are usually 1 1/2 or 1 1/4. Sometimes they are 1 1/2 with a reducer in it. If there is a pipe broken off there, there are ways to get it out, like thru the spout opening. It's not easy, but must be done for well purposes.

Thanks everyone for the great information. I disassembled it as soon as I got it home but now other projects have gotten in the way. Planning to get back on it in a few days. And yes, I definitely want to use it on a well.
