8' IXL parts and info needed

Generally speaking, this area is for general discussion about windmills, in most cases.

8' IXL parts and info needed

Post by Mister Ed »

Hi folks,
I picked up two 8' IXL mills at the Trade Fair, one back geared and one direct stroke. Does anyone have any literature, particularly on the direct stroke? All I can find (online) is a breakdown for the BG, that has a listing for the DS parts.

Does anyone out there know the whereabouts of a direct stroke IXL (restored or not).
Thanks,
Ed

Thank You Paul! Looking for anything and everything I can get my fingers on. That is the parts diagram that I have, but yours is much more legible and the one I have does not have the line drawing (which can be helpful).
Before the old site crashed I had saved a PDF file on the fabricated parts that someone drew up (I think it was probably you?). If I remember correctly you and Ivan were having discussions about the spring measurements being incorrect. Might you happen to have the correct spring measurements?
Thanks,
Ed

Do you need a vane for your IXL?

Maybe, LOL. If I remember correctly that vane you bought was in pretty decent condition. I was going to ask if you still had that vane you bought, but figured I wanted to get moving on these mills first. They need a bunch of work before I can start thinking about sheet metal. And I have to get the Star 12 done before that.
Thanks,
Ed

The vane is in great shape. It is hanging from my rafter and not going anywhere unless someone needs it. I'll take what I paid $135.00 if you need it down the road.

Your mill was one of the cooler things I saw the other day, I can't wait to see how it progresses, I hope I can find one someday. (That I can afford, LOL)

Kinda waiting on some stuff for the Star 12, so I played around with both a IXLs little.

On the direct stroke, I need the upper pump rod guide castings and the pivoting pull out lever. They are the same for the back geared mill, so I have patterns. The broken pitman looks like it had a foreign piece spliced in (the break is on one of the splice "welds"). That casting is a different part number from the BG mill, finding an original to use as a casting pattern may be difficult ... so I may have to punt. That painted vane sheet metal was actually a sandwich, with the original sheet metal in the center and painted sheet on the outside. I'm not sure if I will save that or not. Its still very legible, but original rivets were drilled out for 1/4 bolts to hold the "sandwich" together and probably 15-20 pop rivet holes through the field of the vane. This one I will also probably make a new wheel, using the original sail chairs. The sails on it look good, until you look close. They are pop riveted on. Also, if I compare the overhang of the sail on the chairs to known original BG wheel, I really think the sales are cut too big. More thinking to come on that one.

The back geared mill is all there, one small broken casting to clamp on mast pipe. It is just very rusty & pitted. Was froze up, both shafts are out now. Need to make a new pinion gear, and the bull gear needs a bunch of attention.

No tower cap or stay for either, so hopefully I can find an original to at least make castings from. If not I will make up a pattern as close as I can and have it cast.
Thanks,
Ed
