The ones ive seen with a brass poppet seat on the brass top of the plunger, under the cage. Guess im not sure what you have then.

Lots of those external checks have plastic parts. We always use the ones that are brass, no plastic.

Clean up the brass check, and see how it seats on the plunger. Visit your local tire shop and see what kind of rubber thay have.
